Contest Rules & Scoring

    Section 1--Conteset Scope
  1. First, some history. This program was used as the internal March Madness Contest tool at Microsoft Corporation from 2002-2004. Over 600 Microsoft employees competed annually for what was then called the Campus Commissioner of Bracketology. However, this program is not and never was property of Microsoft, as the author wrote it "on his own time". Between March Madness 2004 and March Madness 2005, the author left the friendly confines of Microsoft, and he took this program with him. As a result, "Campus Commissioner of Bracketology" now has a new home and a new name, the Dawgsled.com Commissioner of Bracketology.
  2. The only requirements to participate in any of the Contests on this site are a connection to the Internet and a valid Email address. If you are reading this, then you are eligible to participate.
  3. The purpose of this program is to provide users with an easy means to conduct a March Madness "Office Pool". The user interface is fairly simple and straightforward. It does not feature the fancy multimedia features that many of the "big name" sites offer. However, the customizable scoring and multiple Bracket features that this site does offer cannot be found anywhere else on the 'Net. This robust functionality makes this site a cut above the rest for organizing your office pools.
  4. On this site, the following terms are used:
    • Contest:  Refers to the yearly "overall" competitions on THIS website.
    • Tournament:  Refers to the basketball tournament itself.
    • Pools:  Refers to the individual pools that you, as the User, can set up to allow for competition among just the people of interest to you.
  5. This program DOES do the following:
    • Supports multiple users.
    • Allows a single user to fill out up to 50 Brackets per login per Contest.
    • Allows users to form customizable "Pools" so that they can more easily compete against individuals of interest to them.
    • Tracks and keeps the score for each individual Pool as well as for each Contest as a whole.
    • Allows us an easy way to have a little fun while determining who the Dawgsled.com Commissioner(s) of Bracketology for the current year is (are).
  6. This program DOES NOT:
    • Have any features that directly support gambling of any kind.
    • Charge any sort of admission fee to participate. It's Free!
    • Have any advertisements. Nor will you ever receive any 3rd party spam for participating.
    • Assume any affiliation with the NCAA.
  7. This program is managed on a personal website. Therefore, if you find any problems or issues, please submit them to the developer at marchmadness@dawgsled.com.  There is a good chance that your issue will be resolved within the hour!

    Section 2--General Program Use
  1. User Accounts:  In order to use this program, you must create a user account.  Your login is your email address.  Once done, this account is good for all Contests being managed by this program.
  2. Once a user has created a user account, they can join one or more of the active Contests, provided that the tournament(s) associated with the Contest(s) they wish to join have not started yet.  Joining a Contest is simple.  A link to do so can be found in the Contest Links column of each Contest's Main Page.
  3. A user who has joined a Contest may leave that same Contest provided that they do not belong to any Pools and/or have not yet filled out any Brackets for the corresponding tournament.
  4. Pools:  In addition to tracking the "overall" Contest standings of participants, this program affords the user an opportunity to create "Pools" for competition among a smaller circle of players.  Users can join other players' Pools, or they can create their own.  There is no limit to the number of Pools a player can create or be a member of.  Creators of Pools (the "Pool Admin") can choose to make their Pools "private" by password-protecting them.  Pool Admins can also customize the scoring of their individual Pools (see Scoring below), can choose how many Brackets each contestant can fill out (up to 5), and can remove unwanted users from their Pool.

    Section 3--Filling Out Your Bracket(s)
  1. Starting in 2007, this program will allow you to fill out up to 50 Brackets per login (up from 10 in 2006). A Bracket Manager feature has been added which allows you to assign your different Brackets to the Pools that you are a member of. Depending on the settings of the Pools you belong to, you will be able to associate up to 5 Brackets per Pool.
  2. You can go back and change your picks at any time before the actual basketball games start, but every time you do so, you will have to start over from scratch. (Note: Implementing functionality to allow you to go back and modify portions of your bracket without having to re-do the entire bracket is on the short list for improvements, but did not "make the cut" for feature improvements this year.)
  3. Absolutely NO LATE ENTRIES will be accepted.  No exceptions.

    Section 4--Scoring
  1. Once the Tournament begins, all links to filling out your bracket will disappear.
  2. Main Scoring:  You will be awarded points for each game in which you correctly forecast the winner  For the worldwide standings, the following scoring system will be used:
    • First Round:  10 points/game
    • Second Round:  20 points/game
    • Third Round:  40 points/game
    • Fourth Round:  80 points/game
    • Final Four:  160 points/game
    • Championship Game:  240 points/game
  3. Upsets:  An optional feature of this site is to award bonus points for correctly forecasting upsets in the first four rounds of the Tournament.
  4. Tiebreakers:  In the event of a tie score at the end of the tournament, the following tiebreakers will be used:
    • 1st tiebreaker:  User who is "closest to the pin" with the final score of the championship game.  Only users who correctly forecast the tournament champion are eligible for this tiebreaker. Tournament runner-up does not matter in the context of this tiebreaker.
    • 2nd tiebreaker:  Total score in the 1st round.
    • 3rd and final tiebreaker:  Total score in the 2nd round.
    • If the tie isn't broken after these three tiebreakers are applied, the users shall be declared to have tied.
  5. Maximum Scoring:  In addition to keeping track of your overall score, your "Maximum" score (displayed in the Max column in the scoreboard table of the Main Page) will also be tallied.
    • Your Maximum score will be highest at the BEGINNING of the tournament.
    • As the Tournament progresses, your Maximum score will decrease every time you incorrectly forecast a game
    • Here are some examples of how an incorrect pick affects your Maximum score
      • Example 1: If you incorrectly forecast a team to win in the first round but have that same team losing in the second round, you will only lose Maximum points for the incorrect first round forecast.
      • Example 2: If the team you picked to win the National Championship loses in the first round, then your Maximum will go down not only for the incorrect first round prediction, but also for every subsequent round that is now known to be an incorrect forecast.  If this happens, you will lose Maximum points equal to sum of the number of points that the subsequent games are worth.  In this example, if the team you picked to win the championship loses in the first round, your Maximum (according to the default scoring system) will decrease by (10+20+40+80+160+240)=550 points!  Avoid doing this--it's not good.
    • At the end of the tournament, your Maximum score will be equal to your Total score.
    • The Maximum score is sensitive to your Pool's Upset Multiplier, so it is possible (and in fact quite likely) that individual Maximums will be slightly different in Pools that award bonus points for upsets.  A user with a larger Maximum at the start of the tournament (i.e. before any games have been reported) has picked "bigger" upsets than a user with a smaller Maximum score.  It's up to you to determine how best to utilize this.

    Section 5--Winning the Contest
  1. The winner of a Contest or Pool shall be the Contestant(s) whose Rank value is 1 after the Tournament has ended.
  2. The winner(s) of each "worldwide" Contest for a given year shall be declared the Dawgsled.com Commissioner(s) of Bracketology for that year. Individual Pool winners will be recognized in their particular Pools.
  3. Once again, there is officially NO MONEY or other illegal wares at stake here.  If you want to create a Pool for your friends or co-workers, then that's fine, but the author of this program does NOT condone using this for gambling.  In fact, if the author were to hear of such things going on, he would have no choice but to cover his ears and say something along the lines of "I cannot hear you. La la la."

    Section 6--Message Board Rules
This program offers the ability to post to a Message Board. Each Contest as a whole has a public message board, and each Pool has its own private message board.
  • Pool Message Boards:  Each Pool's administrator has discretion over content that can be posted to their Pool's private message board. Pool Administrators have the ability to ban a Pool member from posting a message, and they also have the ability to delete individual messages from their Pool's message board.
  • Contest-wide Message Board:  Rules for the Contest-wide message board is as follows:
    1. Keep it clean:  Remember, people of all ages may be reading the words you type.
    2. No Flaming:  All inflammatory posts will be immediately removed, and any posters of inflammatory messages shall be subject to revocation of their message board privileges at the sole discretion of the program administrator.  A message will be considered inflammatory if it contains slanderous, hurtful or mean-spirited verbiage directed towards another person.
All decisions regarding removal of posts/revocation of posting privileges for the Contest-wide message board shall be made by the Contest administrator.  All such decisions are final.
